How to use the AI Token Counter

    1. Paste your prompt or document.
    2. Tap Count tokens; the tokenizer loads on first use.
    3. Compare the count with your model's context limit.

AI models read text as tokens, not words. Limits on prompt size and API pricing are both measured in tokens, so a count helps you avoid cut-off answers and estimate cost.

This tool uses the open-source gpt-tokenizer library with the o200k_base encoding used by GPT-4o models. Other providers such as Gemini and Claude use their own tokenizers, so treat their counts as estimates. In English, one token is roughly four characters.

    Frequently asked questions

Is my prompt sent to OpenAI?

No. Tokens are counted in your browser and the text is never uploaded.

Is the count exact for Claude or Gemini?

No. Those models use different tokenizers, so the number is an estimate for them.
